Hilpert advances
NEW DELHI: Germany’s Marcus Hilpert, who retained the National Grasscourt title in Calcutta recently, led the list of players who moved to within one round of qualifying for the main draw of the $25,000 Challenger Tennis Tournament here today.
Hilpert defeated Rajesh Vohra (India) 6-3 6-4 and Omar Comporese of Italy downed Abou Berthe (Senegal) 6-4 6-2 in second round matches. There was very little action on the opening day of the qualifying rounds as only 13 players have entered for the draw of 32 with only five Indians among them.The main draw gets under way on April 12 with the final slated for April 17.
UP stun BSF
CALCUTTA: Uttar Pradesh XI stunned defending champions Border Security Force 2-1 while strong contenders Punjab and Sind Bank were held to a 2-2 draw by Army Services Corps (ASC), Jalandhar in their group-a quarter final league matches of the 104th Beighton Cup Hockey Tournament here today.
UP shot into the lead in the 43rd minute through a penaltycorner conversion by Avinash Saxena but BSF restored parity in the very next minute through a field goal from Harbhajan Singh. The hard-working Anup Chaturvedi clinched the issue for UP in the 49th minute.
Jr Natl Aquatics
CALCUTTA: The 26th Junior National Aquatic Championship will be held in Jodhpur from June 21 to 25 while the 16th Sub-Junior National Aquatic Championship will be held in New Delhi from July 2 to 4. The Junior Aquatics will be held in the age groups of 15 to 17 years (Group I) and 13 to 14 years (Group II) for boys and girls in accordance with Fina rules, the vice-president of Swimming Federation of India, Ramanuj Mukhopadhyay said here today.
Fed Cup volleyball
PATHANAMTHITTA: The 21st edition of the Federation Cup Volleyball All-India Club Championship would be held here from April 25.
As many as 14 teams are expected to participate in the eight-day event which would be held on league-cum-knock-out basis.
The teams: Men – Punjab Police, Border SecurityForce, Indian Telephone Industries (Bangalore), Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai), Southern Railway (Chennai), Kochi Port Trust, Indian Bank (Chennai) and Indian Army (Delhi).
Women: Indian Railways, kerala State Electricity Board (Thiruvananthapuram), Vypin Volley Academy, Calcutta Eastern Club, Hyderabad Mayors Ladies Club and Bangalore Ladies Club.
