Jockeys call off agitation

Bangalore: The Jockeys Association of India (JAI) withdrew its agitation which had forced cancellation of the races on March 12 by the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC).

Association president Sinclair Marshall said the agitation had been withdrawn following an agreement by the stewards of the BTC to meet JAI representatives on running the races professionally.

They protested against the imposition of a six-month ban on jockey Shekawat for not letting his horse Miner’s right to run on merits last month.

SK Mehra dead

NEW DELHI: Swaran Kumar Mehra, former sports editor of the Delhi edition of Times of India, died following a brief illness. Mehra, 73, is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. Known popularly as `SK’, the outspoken Mehra specialised in cricket and racing.
