Maharashtra pip Gujarat by a wicket

RAJKOT: Maharashtra pulled off a one-wicket win over Gujarat in the final over of their first league encounter in the under-14 limited overs West Zone Inter-state cricket association tournament.

Gujarat made 194-8 in their 40 overs while Maharashtra scored the required runs losing nine wickets.

Gujarat 194-8 in 40 overs (Jugal Parmar 55, Shivam Panghat 32) lost to Maharashtra 195-9 in 49.3 overs (C Suryavanshi 21, Y Takwal 32, S Gaekwad 28; Darji 3-50).

Jeev gets award

CALCUTTA: Jeev Milkha Singh has been voted the Johnnie Walker Asian Golfer of the Month (January), according to a media release.

Singh finished joint third, with South Africa’s David Frost, England’s Steve Webster and Australian Stephen Leany, at the South African PGA Championship at Johannesburg’s Houghton Golf Club. His four round total of eight-under-par 280 earned him $31,690 in prize money.

The 27-year-old from Chandigarh has won the awardtwice before. He had received the award in November 1997 for becoming the first Indian golfer to qualify for the European tour and in June 1998 following his tied-eighth finish at the English Open at Hanbury Manor.

NEW DELHI: Defending champion Parnita Garewal, northern India champion Shruti Khanna, five-time National champion Nonita Lal Qureshi are among 85 participants who will tee-off in the 82nd Ladies all-India Amateur Golf Championship here from February 15 to 18.

Cycle race

MUMBAI: The annual all-India Mumbai-Pune cycle race would be held on March 14 by the Maharashtra Cycling Association. Entries for the 160-km race would close on March 8, a release said.

Karnataka in semis

BANGALORE: Looking for their fourth successive title, Karnataka handed a 7-1 drubbing to Tamil Nadu at the Akkithimmanahalli Stadium on Wednesday to enter the semifinals from Group A in the 14th all-India Telecom hockey tournament.

In other matches of the day, Orissa routed WestBengal 7-0 to keep their hopes alive in Group D and MTNL, Deli beat Rajasthan 4-0 in a match of academic interest in Group B.
