Maharashtra retain squash title

CALCUTTA: Maharashtra retained their Field Marshal SM Maneckshaw Trophy in the Inter-State Squash Championships, defeating Services A 3-1, at the Calcutta Racket Club here today.

Parth Doshi beat Services counterpart Salil Bisht 4-9, 9-3, 9-6, 9-4 in the 47-minute opener. Anuj Kalia made it 1-1 by beating Neeraj Shirgaonkar in a five-set game. Akhil Behl put Maharashtra ahead again by beating Rajdip Brar 9-1, 9-3, 9-7. Manish Chotrani beat Navneet Narain 9-4, 9-1, 9-0 to clinch the issue.

State boys beaten in semi-finals

JAMMU: Punjab beat Jammu and Kashmir 5-2 in the first semi-final while Haryana beat Maharashtra 1-0 in the second in the Under-14 boys hockey championship of the 44th National School Games, played here today. Earlier, in the last quarterfinal, Maharashtra had defeated Gujarat 2-0 through goals by Govind and Alam.

Delhi, Rajasthan teams disqualified

JAMMU: Acting on the protests lodged by Gujarat and Chandigarh during theunder-14 hockey matches of the National School Games, the jury which met here yesterday disqualified Bihar, Delhi and Rajasthan from participation in the 1999 Games. Derawar Singh and Heera Lal both Rajasthan, Amrinder Singh and Amrit Pal Singh both Delhi and Mohd Shakeel and Debender Ekka both Bihar were declared above 14 years by a team of doctors.

Gandhe elected president of MBA

Mumbai: Former International Pradeep Gandhe was elected president of the Maharashtra Badminton Association MBA at their annual general body meeting held at Pune yesterday.

Office bearers: Pradeep Gandhe president, Vishnu Patil senior vice-president, KS Gala, Prakash Paranjpe, SV Natu, Kulin Manek and Ashish Bajpai all vice-presidents, SA Shetty honorary secretary, Girish Natu hon treasurer, Shrikant Vad joint hon secretary and Anil Mahesh advisor.

Paes, Bhupathi for ATP Challenger

Calcutta: Tennis stars Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have confirmed their participation in theUS 50,000 ATP Challenger Tennis Championship beginning at the South Club Lawns here from February One. Tournament director Vece Paes said the cut-off for the draw of 32 in the week-long championship was likely to be 120-130 in the ATP ranking. Dr Paes hoped that as the tournament was being held immediately after the Australian Open, many top-ranked players would drop in to the city for it.

Four National records shattered

CUTTACK: Four National records and two meet records were created on the third day of the 14th Inter-State Junior Athletic Championship today. A Sangram Shwor AP set a National record 4140 in pentathlon for u-16 boys while Delhi8217;s Satish broke the long jump mark 7:32m. In boys u-18, Primesh PS of Kerala set a meet record in 800 metres 1:54.03 while V Sumalata set the girls u-18 record 2:15.57. Suman Devi set a national record in javelin 34.04m in girls under-16 while the other meet record came from Basavaraj in 2000 m steeplechase in boys u-18 6.06.2.

SA seniorsdefeat India by 60 runs

BARODA: A 178-run opening wicket stand between skipper Henry Fotheringham 95 and Omar Henry 72 followed by fine bowling performance by F Davids 3-32 and P Rawson 2-61 enabled South Africa Seniors score a 60-run win over India on Monday.

Brief scores: South Africa 286-5 in 40 overs Henry Fotheringham 95, Omar Henry 72, Kevin Verdroon 67; Suru Nayak 3-59, Ashok Malhotra 2-26 bt India 226-7 Ashok Malhotra 67, Sandeep Patil 43, Yashpal Sharma 32 n.o.; F Davids 3-32, P Rawson 2-61.
