India claim SAARC golf title

BANGALORE: India beat Sri Lanka 2-1 in a keenly-contested match-play to win the team event in the first SAARC Golf Championship conducted at the KGA course here on Sunday. Harmeet Kahlon won easily against Tissa Chandradasa 4 and 3, while Amish Jaitha fought back from a bad start and made it 2 and 1 against RAA Rohana. Digvijay Singh went down fighting 1 and 0 in the other match against Lalith Kumara which was decided in the first extra hole, sudden death play off.

Vijay triumphs

NOIDA: Vijay Kumar 297 almost made a mockery of his overnight six-stroke lead before steadying his nerves on the final hole to win the Rs 5 lakh ONGC-NGC Open Golf Championship at the Noida Golf Club on Sunday. Vijay, who began the day at three-over, made a series of bogies as he struggled with his short game, but finally managed to beat Chandigarh8217;s Amandeep Johl 299 with a birdie on the 72nd hole.

Newson tops

CHENNAI: John Newson of New Zealand won the men8217;s title,while Kayo Wakatsuki emerged champion in the women, in the final phase of the Asian Triathlon Cup series here on Sunday. In the national championship held concurrently, TR Haridharan came first 2:01:54, Shubash Nirmale of Services settled for the silver 2:04:05 while Kaptan Singh also of Services claimed the bronze 2:04:18.

Mah on track

CALCUTTA: Defending champions Maharashtra kept themselves on track for retaining the title as they suppressed Delhi 4-1 in their penultimate league match of the Inter-State Squash Championship. Barring Akhil Behl who conceded his match, all the other four Maharashtra players Awish Jaiswal, Manish Chotrani, Neeraj Shirgaonkar and Saket Wali won.

Shooting Natl

CHENNAI: Country8217;s top shooters, Mansher Singh, Manavjit Singh, Zoravar Singh, would be vying for honours in the 42nd National Shooting Championships for shot gun events to be held here from January 12 to 19. Capt Rathore, Morad Ali Khan, Gaurav Sondhi, Raghu Rai, Rao Inderjit Singh and HS Bediwould be in the line up of the double trap and skeet competition.

Four qualify

NEW DELHI: Four players 8212; Sarang Shroff, Omar Balsara Maharashtra, Rafat Habib of Railway and Delhi8217;s Mukesh Rehani 8212; qualified for the Senior National Snooker Championship here on Sunday.
