Milkha to give Rs 50,000 to Jyoti Sikdar

CHANDIGARH: Legendary Milkha Singh has announced a cash award of Rs 50,000 from his personal pocket to Jyotirmoyee Sikdar for her outstanding performance in the just concluded Asian Games in Bangkok. Congratulating the ebullient middle distance runner from West Bengal who won gold medals in 800 and 1500 metres, Flying Sikh8217; Milkha Singh said 8220;Jyoti deserves all applause for her brilliant performance. Winning two golds by Sikdar is an occasion for the nation to be proud of.8221;

A cheque of Rs one lakh will also be given to Paramjeet Singh for his excellent show in National Open in Calcutta before the Asian Games.

Varsity hockey

Mumbai: A hat-trick by Gurmeet Singh Rao of Rizvi College, Bandra powered Mumbai University to a 6-2 win over Ajmer University in the West Zone inter-varsity tournament at Gwalior on Monday. With the win, Mumbai has qualified for the 16-team all-India league, to be held at Tirupathi in January.

After Gurmeet struck thehat-trick, fellow SAI trainee Asad Khan slammed two more. The sixth goal was scored by Ashish Gonsalves.

Youth nationals

Mumbai: The 15th youth national basketball championship will be held at the newly constructed indoor stadium at Surat from January 23 to 29. The event, earlier scheduled for October end, was postponed after Surat experienced post-seasonal floods.

The youth championship is being held after a gap of three years; the last one allocated to Berhampur, Orissa, was unceremoniously cancelled.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra have named 16 probables each for the boys and girls squads. A camp will be held at Fr Agnel Sports Complex, Vashi from January 14, and the final team will be selected on January 18.

Pune on song

Hyderabad: Hosts Osmania University registered an eight-wicket victory over MJT University Rohalkand, Bareilly, in the third round of the all-India inter-university women8217;s cricket championship here today.

In another match, Pune University scored an emphatic 322-runvictory over Goa University.
