
Bangladesh club declared champs
CALCUTTA: Mukti Joddha Krira Chakra, Dhaka, Bangladesh won the McDowell Cup soccer title by default as two other semifinalists 8212; Mohun Bagan and East Bengal decided to withdraw from the tournament.
Mukti Joddha who, had already reached the final, were to play the winners of the second semifinal between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in the title clash.
Player sends legal notice to federation
MUMBAI: Mumbai player Saket Wali has sent a legal notice to the Squash Rackets Federation of India SRFI asking it to explain how he was left out of the ongoing selection trials to choose the National team for the August 1-15 World Juniors Championship at Princeton in New Jersey. When queried why Wali was not called for the trials, an official of the Squash Rackets Association of Maharashtra SRAM said it was because he would have crossed the age limit of 19 during the World championship.
Simi qualifies for US Open
NEW DELHI: Ace local professional SimiMehra, added another first to her credit when she became the first Indian women golfer to qualify for the US women8217;s Open Championship this year.
Simi, who has had a good season on the ladies Professional Golfers Association LPGA tour, including a fourth place in the 700,000 Australian Ladies Masters Golf Championship and 12th in 500,000 Welch8217;s Circle K Championship, played one-under 71 in the final qualifying round at the 6,700-yard traverse point course in Michigan on Monday to become one of the 14 golfers among 400 participants to qualify for the 1.5 million prize money tournament, the biggest on the LPGA Tour.

NEW DELHI: Professional golfer Rohit Sood, who featured in quite a few India PGA Tour tournaments during the 1997-98 season, died of cardiac arrest on Sunday morning in Calcutta. He was 34.
