CHENNAI:
Mumbai retained team title with 21 points in the three-day third All-India Bank of Baroda chess tournament on Thursday. Ahmedabad (16.5) were runner-up and Pune third.

In the individual competition, first two places went to Mumbai with M Ganesh Kamat (6 points — progressive 26) being the winner and Ramesh Kadae (6 — 25) the runner-up.

Other positions: 3 Girish Koradiya (Ahd) 6, 4 Manorlal (Delhi) 5, 5 A S Chouhan (UP) 5, 6 G Ramprasath (Chennai) 5. Best player: Dilip Deshpande (Mumbai).

Sheikh leads among juniors
CHENNAI:
Mohammed Saif Sheikh of Uttar Pradesh lead the junior section and was fourth in the open category of the clay pigeon trap (National Rules) of the All-India G V Mavlankar National shooting championship at the B Sivanthi Adityan Shooting Range here.

Sheikh shot 13 out of 25 in the open category to tie with P Ikshu Dhanva of Karnataka and Man Singh of Tamil Nadu. B Ashok was leading with 16, followed by R Ravi Kumar (15) andRanjit Kumar (ONGC 14) for second and third spots.

Suchde, Joshna ousted in third round
MUMBAI:
Indian youngsters Sidharth Suchde and Joshna Chinnappa made third round exits in the British Open Junior Squash tournament at Sheffield.

Mumbai-based Suchde was beaten by top-seeded Egyptian Omar Refat 1-9, 8-10, 4-9 while Chennai-based Joshna, seeded ninth, went down to England’s fifth-seeded Kirstey McPhee 4-9, 10-9, 9-2, 5-9, 3-9, according to information received here.

Cueists exit from World Pool tourney
NEW DELHI:
A three-member Indian team led by Geet Sethi impressed in their first appearance in WPA 9-ball World Pool Championship which concluded recently at Alicante, Spain.

Indians Sethi, Devendra Joshi and Dharmendra Lilly were outsed in the first stage of the two-phase championship, held from December 6-12, which was won by American Nick Warner.

Pak team fails to get Indian visa
PATIALA:
SAARC champion India will hope to exploit home conditions and lack of topcontestants from the central Asian countries to reap a rich harvest in the three-day first Central South Asian Gymnastic Championship which began on Thursday.

With Uzbekistan being the only tough opponents in the five-team field, Indian hopes are on a high in the tournament. About 50 gymnasts from India, Nepal, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are vying for top honours in the tournament which started on a disappointing note with Pakistan failing to turn up. Pakistan could not send its team due to inability to get visas, according to Punjab Gymnastics Association president Sudhir Mittal.

Dagar tops in junior show jumping
CHENNAI:
Rohit Dagar of Officers Training Academy (OTA), who is to represent the country in the Junior International show jumping championship to be held on Christmas, finished first in the show jumping juniors (normal) competition in the National Equestrian Championship. Only seven of the 76 competitors qualified for the jump round which was held against time.

Railwaysprobables for hockey Nationals
MUMBAI:
Twenty probables were named by the Indian Railways for the forthcoming National women’s hockey championship. The selected players would undergo training at Delhi from December 26.

Probables: Goalkeepers: Tingonglima Chanu (Western), Helen Mary (Central). Full-backs: Sandeep Kaur, Mary Stella Tirkey, Amandeep Kaur (Northern). Half-backs: Sunita Dayal, Sita Gussain (NR), Sumrai Tete (South-Eastern), Asha Dang (SE), Davinder Kaur (NE). Forwards: Ferdina Ekka, Manjinder Kaur, Kiran Bala, Kamla Dalal, Pritam Rani (NR), Jyoti S Kullu (Rail Coach Factory), Annu Chaudhary, Meenakshi (NE), Pakpi Devi, Suraj Lata Devi (WR).
