India has called on the international community to work in unison to ensure that terrorists and their supporters do not have access to arms, funds and safe havens, besides means of transportation for their 8216;deadly goods8217;.

Intervening in the Security Council debate on 8216;threat to international peace and security due to terrorism8217;, Indian ambassador to UN Nirupam Sen said international cooperation was vital to 8220;root out8221; the network of illicit activities, including clandestine proliferation of sensitive technologies.

In order to achieve these aims, he said, it is necessary to finalise at the earliest, a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism CCTI, which will build a strong interlocking network of member States, international organisations and specialised agencies working in cooperation to counter terrorism.

CCTI is held up mainly because of the inability of the member States to agree on the definition of terrorism, with recent suggestions that it be adopted without defining the term.

Sen also stressed on the need for the Council to work with the General Assembly to strengthen the multi-lateral and collective dimensions of counter terrorism effort.

8220;As a State with a long experience of dealing with terrorism, we are of the view that better cooperation between the Council and the General Assembly will provide our collective efforts greater legitimacy and ownership,8221; he told the 15-member Council.

Sen also said that India remains willing to provide all assistance to the larger international efforts to counter the threat of terrorism.
