NEW DELHI: Winner of three gold medals in the Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur, weightlifter AK Pandian has been ranked 21st in the world.Pandian thus became the highest ranked Indian men lifter in the 56 kg category with a total of 245 kg as per the USA-based Denis Reno’s magazine. Wilson Dhanraj is five places behind Pandian in this category with 242.5 kg while T Muthu — who won two bronze medals in the recently held Asian meet in China — is ranked 31st with a total of 235 kg.

Nepal Masters golf begins today

KATHMANDU: The Wills Sport Indian Golf Tour transcended national boundaries and will make its first international stop of the season at the spanking new Gokarna Golf Club when the Rs-5.5 lakh (Rs 8.8 lakh NC) Surya Nepal Masters begins from Wednesday.

The main event will be played between Oct 6-9, which was kicked off by a gala pro-am today, won by Feroz Ali’s team.

Team Feroz wins Pro-Am: Feroz Ali and his team of Gopal Chitrakar and LP Gurungwon the team title in the Surya Nepal Masters pro-am.

Omkar, Rujuta, Juili champions

MUMBAI: Omkar Torgalkar (sub-junior boys), Rujuta Rege (sub-junior girls) and Juili Inamdar (cadet girls) were the champions of the Mumbai-Suburban District table tennis championship at the Mulund Gymkhana on Tuesday. Mallika Parekh and Shalmali Inamdar will contest both the women’s and girls’ finals.

Geoff Marsh ends tenure as coach

SYDNEY: Geoff Marsh today bid farewell as Australian cricket coach. He will be replaced by Allan Border when Australia leaves tomorrow for a three-week tour of Zimbabwe that features the inaugural Test between the two nations and three One-Day Internationals. Marsh has joined Australia’s selection panel but resigned as coach because of the demands of time and travel on his family.

Injured Meligeni concedes 1st round

PALERMO: Third-seeded Fernando Meligeni (Brazil) withdrew from his 1st-round match yesterday in the Palermo clay court tennis tournament because of a right leg injury.
