K P S Gill, whose appointment as Gujarat Government8217;s Security Advisor was formally announced by Chief Minister Narendra Modi today, said his first job would be to 8216;8216;put an end to the violence and then try to bring the two communities back together.8217;8217;
Instead of Opening New File, MEA hits Delete Instead of correcting its 55-frame slide-show on Gujarat violence, which didn8217;t mention a single attack on Muslims, the Ministry of External Affairs MEA has quietly removed it from its website. The contents of the slide-show had been first reported in The Sunday Express last week.
Said MEA spokesperson Nirupama Rao: 8216;8216;The information was on the website for a limited period of time and not a permanent feature.8217;8217; When asked about the factual discrepancy, she declined to comment.

Calling the two-month spell of violence in the state as 8216;8216;exceedingly bad,8217;8217; Gill said: 8216;8216;Gujarat is an issue the whole nation is concerned with and on which the Government has to deliver. I8217;m beginning the job with mixed emotions but an overall sense of optimism.8217;8217;
Speaking to The Indian Express in a telephone interview from Ahmedabad, the 67-year-old Gill admitted that if there were high expectations from him, that did make his task more difficult. 8216;8216;I will evolve a response to the situation but not spend too much time on it. I will try and rush every day with the least amount of bureaucratic delays.8217;8217;
The tag of 8216;8216;super cop8217;8217; has clung on to Gill even seven years after his retirement and on his first day of stock-taking in Ahmedabad, he quoted T S Eliot: So here I am in the middle way/ trying to learn the use of words8230;8217;8217; For, 8216;8216;besides other things,8217;8217; he said, 8216;8216;a certain choice of words is needed so that the situation does not exacerbate.8217;8217;
While he declined to comment on what transpired between him and Chief Minister Narendra Modi, he indicated he was banking on his experience with politicians8212;particularly Chief Ministers. 8216;8216;Every political person has a political orientation and the thing is to sensitise them properly. Many police officers and civil servants claim to have defied the political establishment. But let me tell you I have seen the very same people who make these claims lick the boots even of junior ministers,8217;8217; he said.

After spending the day visiting sensitive pockets in Ahemdabad and holding meetings with Gujarat police officers, Gill gave an early assessment: 8216;8216;The one thing that is staring you in the face is that the intelligence network in the State is poor.8217;8217;
Gill confirmed that the possibility of Pak-backed agencies cashing in on the Gujarat situation came up during discussions with Home Minister L K Advani and Modi. 8216;8216;There8217;s no doubt they Pakistan have shown an abiding interest in the situation here. If you see the past seizures of RDX and the arrest of agents in the state, you will see what I mean. They will want to exploit the situation.8217;8217;
