PUNE, June 28: As the June 30 deadline for submitting Form 49 A for seeking permanent account number (PAN) draws closer, the Income-Tax Department is gearing up for the arduous task of screening the submitted forms.
The panjandrums at the Pune region head office of I-T are believed to have been instructed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes to speedily complete the work of screening of forms designating it as “top priority area.”
According to highly-placed sources in CBDT, the board has asked all the major regional centres to make necessary provisions like deploying extra manpower, if the need be, for cutting down the time consumption in assessing the submitted the forms.
The allotment work of PAN will be done through a centralised system devised by the National Computing Centre in New Delhi. While CBDT will monitor the overall national reception of PAN data and subsequent allotment of PAN, the regional centres will supervise the required data provision work to the main centre at local-level. The Pune region has been allotted a regular slot of two-hours on the online data compilation work to be carried out at the National Computing Centre.
The collection centres for the PAN forms in the Pune region have been virtually inundated, as more and more people are turning up for Form 49 A submissions. Over 6 lakh PAN forms had been submitted in the Pune region by May 31. There are 11.10 lakh income tax assesses in the Pune region. A sizeable number is expected to add to main figure as the PAN scheme draws to a close on Tuesday.
