PUNE, AUGUST 30: India8217;s Koneru Humpy 5 won a gold medal in the women8217;s section of the Mind Sports Olympiad Masters Chess Championship when she drew her ninth and the final round game against compatriot International Master V Sarvanan 5 in just 10 moves, according to the reports reaching here.

Abhijit Kunte, who had missed his Grandmaster norm title by a whisker yesterday losing to Israeli GM L Phsakhis, defeated International Master Dunnington of UK Elo 2366 in the black8217;s side of English Opening at the Olympiad Conference Hall, Kinsington London, today.

Dunnington proposed a draw as early as in the 12 moves, when black had equalised the position and Queens were off the boards. However, the IOC employee Abhijit Elo 2465 refused the draw offer and led the game to a two rooks-knight and seven pawns end-game. With control over center and an open g8217; file, the former National A8217; champion penetrated in opponents territory brilliantly and succeeded in mating white after 42 moves.

Abhijit 8,missed his final GM norm by half a point, but finished for a tie for 8-14 places.

Meanwhile, the first place was shared by three GM8217;s each having seven points. On the top board, overnight leader GM A Baburin Elo 2593 lost to GM Speelman, while GM Phsakhis of Israel defeated GM Gallagher in the whites side of Kings Indian attack to join Baburin and Speelman on the top.
