8226; But for the Express investigation, 8216;Who called whom when Gujarat was burning8217;, the reality would have been buried. The report brings out the naked truth as to how senior police officers, including then director general K. Chakravarthy; Police Commissioner P.C. Pandey and Joint Commissioner M.K. Tandon, who was in charge of the area where Jafri lived, showed gross negligence in their duty to protecting citizens from riots. This is one of saddest chapters of post-independence riots wherein innocent persons were burnt alive even though the top cops knew everything. Ehsan Jafri was a VIP victim. His cruel death was known. The Express report has revealed the startling disclosure of a girl and her brother who had hid in his house in the hope that Jafri could help them. Is it not a wonder that in the largest democracy in the world these culprits are moving about scot free? Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper I call upon the Supreme Court to open its eyes and not be a mere spectator to the need to dispense justice. The first step should be the immediate suspension of the police officials involved.

8226; Brilliant report. 8216;Top cops knew ex-Cong MP Ehsan Jafri was burning8230;8217;, IE, Nov 28. I hope that people become aware what types of people are serving in our police forces, irrespective of which part of the country they are in. In Gujarat, this force 8212; and in particular senior officers 8212; have neither conscience nor the sense of self-respect, otherwise they would have resigned. Isn8217;t it time to get these people charged for crimes against humanity?

Eye-opener
8226; The article, 8216;We are in denial8217; IE, Nov 27, was very well articulated piece on a very important issue about Hindus. I think every Hindu must read this article. It is a eye opener.

8226; The author seems to advocate vigorous engagement by the Hindus for securing a place in the international polity. This is basically against the tenets of a religion which excludes none, not even agnostics and atheists.

City blues
8226; I would like to commend Coomi Kapoor8217;s excellent column on the future of Mumbai and Delhi, as a reflection of the condition of the state of India8217;s cities 8216;The road to Mumbai8217;, IE, Nov 22. Kapoor accurately portrays perhaps the most influential 8212; and often negative 8212; force shaping India8217;s cities: the short-sighted policies of politicians. However, it is up to grassroots civic groups and urban planners to engage in useful dialogue and even productive collaboration with politicians. There are other major influences on cities like Mumbai and Delhi. One is the colonial hangover, in which the educated classes glorify western influences 8212; whether they are from the Victorian era or the large shopping malls that mimic those in the US. Both models are exclusionary and exploitative in the way they are conceived and function.

Divine help
8226; Apropos of the report 8216;Anil seeks divine help for peace8217; IE, November 28, if research is done, it can be established that the 8216;Theory of the Two Brothers8217; in Indian culture generally does not make for a united family. The earlier there8217;s a separation, the better it is.
