SHEFFIELD, MAY 2: Title-holder John Higgins was swept out of the World Snooker Championship, beaten 17-10 in the semi-finals by Mark Williams of Wales yesterday.

There was disappointment too for the mercurial Ronnie O8217;Sullivan who missed out on a special pay-out of nearly 270,000 on the way to losing 17-13 to former champion Stephen Hendry.

Trailing 14-10 overnight, Scotsman Higgins faced a big task in the best of 33-frame match and Williams raced into his first final with scores of 119-0 81-21 67-42.

Hendry and O8217;Sullivan were tied at 12-12 going into the last session and the Englishman took the first frame to make it 13-12.

But the Scot, six times a world champion, roared back to take the next five frames to book his place in the final, starting today.

Defeat compunded O8217;Sullivan8217;s woes.

Earlier in the day he had been in line for a highly lucrative maximum 147 break but narrowly missed a fairly easy pink, the penultimate ball.
