Move over, expensive dresses. If you really want to make your wife happy, just take her out for a candlelight dinner tonight, for a new study has found that happiness for a woman is a romantic meal with her hubby.

Researchers have based their findings on a survey of 1,000 women, all aged between 20 and 70, some 80 per cent of whom are married or living with their partners and 72 per cent of whom have children.

Almost 84 per cent of the respondents said that the best things in life are free and that they preferred spending time with their partners and family over shopping or going out for a glass of wine with friends, the Daily Mail reported.

In fact, to be specific, 40 per cent of the women said they would enjoy having a romantic dinner with their husbands in their spare time, while out of the remaining 60 per cent, almost half said that they preferred being with their kids.

However, less than a third claimed that they preferred time alone while less than five per cent said material goods, such as diamonds, a sports car, a yacht or their Christian Louboutin shoes were the most valuable things in their lives, the survey revealed.

“It’s great to see that dynamic women in their forties and beyond, whose lives are packed 24/7, still take enormous pleasure from the simple things in life.

“They may be bombarded by consumer choice at every turn, but in their heart — whatever the financial climate — they know that the best things in life are free,” Sue James of Woman and Home magazine, which commissioned the survey, was quoted by the British newspaper as saying.
