The Supreme Court8217;s decision to make registration of all marriages mandatory is laudable. It should help in sorting out marital complications and help women assert their rights. But the apex court should see to it that the marriage registration facility is guaranteed in all corners of the country. It should also guard against unscrupulous middlemen trying to fool the people. Without proper infrastructure, the move may backfire.

Unfair, this
8226; I was not at all surprised to read Nadeem8217;s outburst 8216;On the Record8217;, IE, February 14 against our legal system and our police. Many a time, criminals, anti-social elements, smugglers, and fugitives have cried hoarse, albeit from a safe haven, about the 8216;injustice8217; meted out to them on account of their being members of the minority community. And all this while on the run from the laws of a democratic country which has always extended fair and equal, if not special, treatment to Muslims. If Nadeem is really innocent, he should not have chosen to escape the country that gave him love, name and fame. If at all our police system is to be blamed, it is for allowing Nadeem to escape and not make a serious attempt to get him back to face trial to prove his 8216;innocence8217;.

Late reaction
8226; Apropos of 8216;NDA tells Supreme Commander: stop Muslim headcount8217; IE, February 15, I8217;m unable to understand why the NDA and others crying foul now did not object to the setting up of the committee in March 2005, which has only gone about its business in keeping with its terms of reference?

Picture this
8226; While people in Dubai reportedly celebrated Valentine8217;s Day with great fanfare, it8217;s a pity that people in India, the world8217;s largest democracy, were being hunted and hounded by the hardliners who are branding the festival of love as uncivilised, obscene and against our culture.

Error, definitely
8226; Jaithirath Rao has made a commendable diagnosis of the special economic zones policy in 8216;Supremely Erroneous Zones8217; IE, February 13. Tax-exemption for some at a few places is definitely bad policy. It will become a haven for big houses to become bigger. But Rao has equated this 8216;8216;ill8217;8217; with the LPG subsidy. That is not fair. LPG subsidy is a life support for the common people in a welfare state.

But why?
8226; I was pained to read about the survey of religions being carried out in the army as also the recent Buddhist-Muslim violence in Leh and Kargil. As an armyman who has served extensively in Leh and Kargil, these two events are truly traumatic. Perhaps those who have not served in these areas may not be able to empathise with people like me who have always striven to hold the flag of the nation high regardless of our caste, creed, religion and ethnicity.
