8226; This refers to 8216;How not to respond to a tsunami8217; by T.V.R. Shenoy IE, January 13. A sea wall does not have to be as tall as the Qutub Minar. In any case, an effective tsunami 8220;wall8221; would be a way to blunt the impact, not to stop the wave altogether.
At a guess, three or four bands of well-rooted vegetation parallel to as well as close to the coast at risk would slow down a big wave as it moves inland. Tough plants along the seashore would also help protect beaches from erosion, thereby keeping the sea at a distance from cropland and built-up areas. Mangroves and coral formations do this kind of thing well.

8226; While different estimates are being made about the destructive energy released by tsunami, the role of mangroves in buffering the impact of the wave is being underplayed.
Mangroves protect the coast by absorbing the energy of storm-driven waves and wind. According to some environmentalists, damage and destruction in Thailand could have been much less if mangroves had not been removed to make way for hotels and aquaculture. What is the status of mangroves in India? We should understand the useful role of mangroves in minimising the impact of killer waves on life and property.

Factual relief

8226; The unprecedented amount of relief material for tsunami victims flowing in from all parts of the world is, ironically, posing a major problem. With the government engaged in assessing the extent of damage caused to families and NGOs complaining about non-cooperation from the government and lack of knowledge about who exactly needs help, it is unlikely that relief would reach the needy.
The rehabilitation process would be made much more effective if there is a nodal agency to coordinate the relief efforts and ensure that the deserving get adequate help.

Don8217;t pre-judge

8226; The brazen display of state power against the Kanchi shankaracharyas smacks of vindictiveness on the part of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa 8216;Vindictive?8217;, IE, January 12. The Supreme Court has clearly stated that there is no prima facie evidence to prove Jayendra Saraswati8217;s involvement in the Sankaraman murder case.
Custody 8212; judicial and police 8212; is sought to be extended on various pretexts as a means of punishment so that the Kanchi shakaracharyas are punished by way of detention even before the commencement of the trial. 8212; Joy Banerjee Mumbai

Trial by reality TV

8226; It is absolutely shocking to see that the Tamil Nadu police have released some portions of the interrogation of the Kanchi shankaracharya, while in custody. Apparently this has been done to create a wedge between the senior and junior shankaracharyas.
