NEW DELHI, May 14: The Bharatiya Janata Party BJP on Friday launched frantic efforts to resolve the Uttar Pradesh crisis by deputing party general secretary Govindacharya to Lucknow.

While BJP spokesman M Venkaiah Naidu denied sending any directives to Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, party leaders, however, confirmed that the package Govindacharya offered to the warring factions was essentially on the same line being toed by another general secretary Sanghpriya Gautam.

Gautam8217;s package to Kalyan for buying peace was dropping controversial appointees like Kusum Rai, Ram Kumar Shukla and Rajendra Tiwari, providing security to rebels, dropping 8220;false8221; cases against them and taking major decisions in consultation with State party chief Rajnath Singh.

Kalyan, however, refused to accept any condition for his continuance as Chief Minister. On Thursday, he even offered to quit if the party leadership wanted him to resign.

The party now hopes that Govindacharya will persuade Kalyan to agree to some, if notall, clauses of the Gautam package. In case Kalyan does not agree, the BJP leadership will not be left with much choice except replacing him with someone else, but only after the Parliamentary elections.

Naidu told reporters on Friday that the party hoped the crisis to be resolved soon. A Kalyan-detractor Lalji Tandon, called on the party chief Kushabhau Thakre today to apprise him of latest political situation in UP. Naidu quoted Tandon as having denied equating Thakre with Sitaram Kesari, as some media reports claimed recently.

Asked whether BJP approved of the caste rallies like Kashyap Rally being organised by Kalyan in Lucknow tomorrow, Naidu said, 8220;Ideologically the BJP is not in favour of caste-based issues. But the party does not prohibit anyone from participating in such functions either8221;.
