CHENNAI, July 13: It was a surprise of sorts to find Indians pulling out in a tournament mainly catered to give them the exposure.
Top seed Gopi Chand and Arup Baidya failed to put in an appearance as the Asian Satellite Badminton Championship got off to an ominous start at the Multip Purpose Indoor Stadium on Monday.
Other Indians had a field day and the ones to make an impression were the third seed Abhinn Shyam Gupta and Ajit Wijetilek. Gupta beat Maldivian Noosa Nashid, 15-3, 15-5 and Wijetilek was no less impressive while putting out Mohammed Rasel Kabir of Bangladesh 15-10, 15-11.
