Indian pugilists were off to a fine start at the sixth World Cadet Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan with Vikas Yadav winning his opening bout and the rest getting a bye to the next level.

Vikas claimed a 21-9 victory over Uzbekistan’s Sherzojon Isakjonov to move into the second round of the 48kg category. He will now take on Russian Vladimir Gavrilov, who beat Sri Lanka’s A Anuranga 23-10 in his opening bout yesterday.

The other Indians in the fray got first-round byes.

In the 46kg category, Umesh Yadav will open his campaign against Kyrgyzstan’s Omurbek Malabekov in the second round on September 4. Pramod Kumar (52kg) will take on Australian Williams Timacoy in the second round later today for a place in the quarter finals of the elite junior event, meant for age-group between 15 and 16.

In 50kg, Vipin Kumar will also open his campaign today and will take on Russian Farson Chilubayev in the second round. In 54kg, Durgarao Vankala will be up against Hungarian Nagy Kristian in the second round. The championship has close to 30 teams comprising over 200 boxers vying for the top honours in 13 categories. The Indian team is competing in five categories.
