SYDNEY: Lenny Krayzelburg of the United States set a world record for the men’s 200 metres backstroke today with a time of one minute 55.87 seconds in the final at the Pan Pacific Championships. Krayzelburg’s time lowered the previous record of 1:56.57 set by Spain’s Martin Lopez-Zubero at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in November 1991.

Soccer riot

DHAKA: Two people were killed and some 200 others were injured in violence between up to 20,000 rival villagers during a football match in eastern Bangladesh, reports said today. Rioting broke out yesterday among residents of two villages about 100 km east of Dhaka after both wanted to play on the same field. An 18-year-old student and a rickshaw puller were killed in the eight hours of clashes. Among the wounded were a deputy district police chief and a magistrate.
