
No boycott planned for India tour, says Steve Waugh
CHRISTCHURCH: Australian limited-overs cricket captain Steve Waugh dismissed speculation today of a boycott of the tour of India later this month.
Waugh, who is Australian Cricketers8217; Association ACA secretary, said the Union had not discussed boycotting the tour as part of a dispute with the Australian Cricket Board ACB. He said a story published in some Australian newspapers on Sunday speculating about strike action during the subcontinent tour had no substance.
Slater to replace out-of-form Elliott
SYDNEY: Former Test opening batsman Michael Slater is poised for a recall to the Australian cricket team here at the expense of out-of-form Matthew Elliott, as the squad prepares forAtilde;iquest;its tour of India.
Slater, who turns 28 when the team lands in Mumbai on February 21, was dumped from the Test side after the one-Test tour of India in October 1996.
Italian reporter faces Olympic expulsion
NAGANO: An Italian journalist facesexpulsion from the Nagano Winter Games after getting past tight security to interview athletes during opening ceremony.
The journalist, who works for the state-run Rai Television network, marched for about 20 metres with the New Zealand delegation and sent back a live report. The International Olympic Committee IOC took away the journalist8217;s credentials after he was identified on a video replay.
Russia8217;s medal haul, 99 or 100?
HAKUBA, JAPAN: Ninety years after he won a gold medal, Nikolai Panin caused a little confusion at the Nagano Games today.
The official Russian media guide and Olympic history books say Russia and the former Soviet Union, had won 98 gold medals at Winter Games before Nagano. So, Olga Danilova8217;s gold in the women8217;s 15-kilometre cross-country race today was Russia8217;s 99th. But the official computer records of the Nagano Games show Danilova had just clinched a historic 100th.
