Ganguly likely to feature in JP Atray tourney

Top cricketers like former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, S Sreesanth, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh will be seen in action during the15th edition of All India J. P. Atray tournament, which will get underway from September 17 at the PCA Stadium, Mohali, Sector 16 Stadium, Chandigarh, DAV School, Sector 8, Chandigarh and St. John8217;s School, Sector-26 and Cricket Stadium, Barwala. The tournament is the curtain raiser before start of the domestic season and is recognized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

According to Sushil Kapoor, organising secretary of the tournament, said that 17 top teams would compete in the tournament which will be played on league-cum- knock out basis. All matches will be of 50 overs each side and will be played under the ICC rules of one-day cricket. The teams will be divided into four pools and top team from each pool will qualify for the semi-finals.

The likely participating teams are last year8217;s winners MRF, Chennai, runners-up St. Bank of Mysore-Bangalore, Punjab Cricket Club, BPCL, Mumbai, St. Bank of Hyderabad, HPCA Academy, ONGC-Delhi, Assam CA, Indian Oil Corp.-Mumbai, Moody ICL, MPCA XI, CM XI-Haryana, LIC Cricket Club, PCA Colts, RCA XI and India Cements Ltd,- Chennai.

The winners will get a purse of Rs.1.50 lakh, runners-up Rs.60,000, the third position Rs.30,000 and fourth position Rs.15,000. Arrangements have been finalised with Doordarshan, New Delhi for live telecast of the day/night final match 2.30 pm onwards which will be played at PCA Stadium, Mohali, on September 30.

Top drawer Indian players namely Niraj Patel, Sidharth Trivedi, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Naman Ojha, Md. Kaif, Rajat Bhatia, Hrisikesh Kanitkar for Air India, Wasim Jafar, Rohit Sharma, Chateswar Pujara, Rajesh Pawar, Ravikant Shukla, Pinal Shah for Indian Oil, Sreeshant for BPCL, Praveen Kumar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Munaf Patel for ONGC, Daniel Manohar for State Bank of Hyderabad, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, M. S. Gony, Pankaj Dharmani, Gagandeep Singh for PCC 038; PCA Colts and Harvinder Singh, Ranade Bose for LIC Cricket Club will be seen in action.

Along with these cricketers, support staff including former internationally acclaimed cricketers like Greg Chappel Rajasthan Cricket Association, Intikhab Alam PCC, Narinder Hirwani Air India and Gursharan Singh Assam CA will be present during the tournament.

Kapoor further informed that the tournament will be played for Pearls Trophy.

Vivek Atray, convenor of the tournament, said that the tournament committee has decided to give Rs.15, 000 as financial aid to the family of D. C. Worel, former Ranji player who died recently.
