KOLHAPUR, Sept 20: Shree Ganraya Awards, instituted by the Kolhapur police to rejuvenate the spirit of Ganesh festival, were presented here today with much fanfare.
The awards, given to those mandals who make a conscious effort to contribute to the society by implementing public welfare schemes, were distributed in the presence of Kolhapur mayor Shivajirao Kadam and Deepak Tilak, general manager and trustee of the Pune based Kesari-Maratha Trust.
Speaking on the occasion, Madhav Sanap, District Superintendent of Police, said that the awards were aimed at bringing about a positive change in the attitude of Ganesh mandals. “They have assumed a lot of significance and are facilitating a positive competition among mandals, propelling them to undertake schemes of public welfare,” Sanap said.
He lauded the Vasagade village, which had carried out public welfare works worth Rs six lakhs from the funds generated during the one village, one Ganpati project.
Sanap said that 278 villages in the district participated in the project.
