It8217;s a gift straight from a software giant8217;s heart. And one that brings a healing touch. The new three-storey super-speciality block, complete with an elevator and ACs, stands out on the premises of the old government-run Sassoon Hospital. The first-of-its-kind joint venture of the public-private sector, it8217;s a gift from Infosys8217; voluntary arm, Infosys Foundation. They built the Rs 5-crore hospital with rooms earmarked for ICU units, diabetic clinic and neuro-surgery units, and that too in 10 months flat.

The hospital will be formally inaugurated and handed over to the Sassoon authorities on Sunday. Infosys Foundation project staffers say it has been Sudha Murthy8217;s baby all along. 8216;8216;Pune is very dear to Murthy and me. I have my roots here, my family has studied in Pune. But this is incidental. The real reason behind the project is a moral obligation towards the state of Maharashtra,8217;8217; says Sudha Murthy.

Infosys Foundation does not believe in direct financial assistance. And, hence, the tie-up between the hospital and Infosys was such that the company would fund and construct the hospital building, while the government would manage the equipment and run it.

Sunil Advani, who oversaw the project in Pune, says: 8216;8216;The hospital has four floors and is spread over 36,000 sq feet. The company got its own contractors 8212; JMC from Ahmedabad and architects from Bangalore.8217;8217;

Murthy explains, 8216;8216;I still have faith in government hospitals because at the end of the day these are the only ones open to the poorest of the poor. The power of money is the power to give. It gives us immense pleasure to be able to give something to the vast majority of the underprivileged. It8217;s a lesson I have learnt from the Tatas.8217;8217;

Largely run by Sudha Murthy, Infosys Foundation has carried out healthcare activities in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Orissa and Punjab.

For Sassoon Hospital, each day is a struggle, as it caters to nearly 10,000 patients.
