CHENNAI, MAY 12: For Athirai and Vicky alias Vigneshwaran, accused in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case, who have been ordered to be released by the Supreme Court, it will be a happy union.

The two fell in love while they were lodged in the high-security Poonamallee sub-jail and wanted to get married. When the prison authorities did not give them permission, the couple appealed to the Madras High Court. But their plea was rejected. Now, with the release order, they will be marrying soon. Another couple, Nalini and Murugan, against whom the death sentence awarded by the designated court was confirmed by the Supreme Court today, got married at Tirupathi when they were eluding the special investigations team of the CBI.

A girl, Harithra, was born to them. Nalini was six months’ pregnant when she was arrested on June 14, 1991. Harithra was born in October when Nalini was an undertrial in the Poonamallee jail.

After a brief stay at the Egmore Government Hospital in Chennai where she gave birth to her daughteramid tight security, Nalini was taken back to the prison with the new-born named Sreeni (combining a part of the names of her parents) and later Harithra. Harithra used to accompany her parents to the designated court during the pre-trial proceedings and was the centre of attraction among the accused. The child’s maternal grandmother Padma and uncle Bhagyanathan were also accused in the case and lodged in the same prison. They too have been ordered released. After the in-camera trial began, Nalini’s sister took care of Harithra. A couple of years ago, the girl was taken to Australia where she now lives with her paternal grandmother.
