With Jatropha-generated bio-diesel yet to become readily available, Northern Railway has started using waste edible-oil being generated from the kitchens of Delhi8217;s top five-star hotels to make bio-diesel. Northern Railway has tied-up with leading five-star hotels including Maurya Sheraton, Ashok, Oberoi and Siddhartha to provide them with waste cooking oil free-of-cost.

8216;8216;This waste oil, when esterified gets converted into bio-diesel,8217;8217; says R.K Upadhyay, Chief Mechanical Engineer, Northern Railway. Plants made out of condemned spare-parts of locomotives have been set-up at Shakurbasti and Tughlaqabad Diesel Sheds to convert waste edible oil into bio-diesel . 8216;8216;We have already used this type of oil on a jeep, a generator and fork-lifter. Next in line is a DEMU locomotive,8217;8217; says Deputy CME Sandeep Jain. The arrangement suits both since these hotels are bound by ISO 14001 norms to dispose off these waste oils in a proper manner.
