MUMBAI, JAN 1: The police registered the first criminal case of the millennium in the city with the arrest of five youth who were planning to loot a beer bar at Malad E early on Saturday.

Officers attached to the Dindoshi police station laid a trap for a gang of armed dacoits who were planning to loot a beer bar at Malad East. Police said the unidentified men were seen near the bar at around 1.30 am. They were apprehended and a search revealed that they were in possession of a loaded country-made revolver, two choppers, a sword and a Rampuri8217; knife, police added.

The five men, aged between 19 and 21 years, have been identified as Vinod Soni, Yadukumar Shah, Munnakumar Choudhary, Manoj Gupta and Balukumar Shah. The police registered a case of preparation for dacoity againt the accused before they were remanded to police custody till January 7.

The accused during interrogation confessed that they had plans to loot a few more bars during the city8217;s New Year celebrations. The Dindoshi police, who areinvestigating the case, are ascertaining their gang affiliation.

In an another case, four unidentified men barged into a diamond polishing unit and escaped with a booty of Rs 2.5 lakh at Malad on Friday evening.The police said the owner of the diamond polishing unit and his younger brother were at their factory at Malad when four men barged in and whipped out choppers around 9.30 pm on Friday.

The owner8217;s brother was attacked with choppers when he tried to prevent the four men from escaping with the booty. The robbers however managed to escape with polished and unpolished diamonds worth Rs 2.5 lakh.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where his condition is stated to be stable.
