Fiona Mackeown, mother of British teenager Scarlett Eden Keeling, was issued summons to depose before the investigating agencies by Goa police.
The summons issued late Thursday evening, stems from Fiona8217;s media statement claiming that she knows Scarlett8217;s killers and the accused is a highly connected person in the state.
8220;If she is in the knowledge of something she should come down and depose. We have issued summons to her under section 39 and 160 of CrPC wherein it is a statutory duty of every person to provide evidence to the police, if they are in knowledge of it,8221; Superintendent of Police north Bosco George told reporters in Panaji.
Fiona, who left for UK, last Sunday, in an interview had claimed that she knew the identity of a suspected killer in her daughter8217;s case who is a 8216;powerful person8217; with money.
Scarlett8217;s bruised body was found on Goa8217;s popular Anjuna beach on February 18.
8220;I was approached by many people who told me this man8217;s name. It is common knowledge out there it seems. He is a powerful person with money. It would explain a lot 8211; why police have tried to cover it up,8221; she was quoted as saying by the British media.
Goa police issued summons to Fiona on her lawyer Vikram Varma8217;s address.
8220;The advocate refused to accept the summons stating that Fiona has already left for UK,8221; George said.
The police on Friday moved the home department to serve the summons at Fiona8217;s address in Davonshire, UK.
George said the since the notification giving consent to hand over case to CBI is already out, Fiona can depose before the central agency.
Fiona8217;s lawyer, Varma, on the other hand, denied that he has received any summons. 8220;How can I react to anything before reading the summons,8221; he questioned.
Varma said: 8220;Fiona did say she knows that somebody being involved in the crime and she wants to give the information to the CBI.8221;
8220;Her information is based on the inputs which she got locally after she deposed before the state police during the investigation of the case. She has lost faith in local police and wants to depose before CBI,8221; he said.
Varma said if Fiona gets visa she would be visiting the country sometime in June to follow up the case.
