Sivaganga

The seat, which has come to be known as the Harvard-educated former Finance Minister P Chidambaram8217;s pocketborough, was in the Pudukkottai Lok Sabha constituency in 1952, 1957 and 1962. The community-wise break-up is: Muslims 7, Christians 6, Scheduled Castes 17, Mukkulathors 18, Idaiyans/Yadavs and Vellalas around 7 each and Nadars and Muthurajas around 5 each. Pallans 10 and Parayans 3 dominate among the Scheduled Castes.

Chidambaram has been winning from here since 1984. He held on to the seat in 1989, 1991, 1996 and 1998 with huge margins. But last two times, he was a candidate of the Tamil Maanila Congress and not that of the Congress. This time, however, the TMC is not being supported by either the AIADMK or the DMK, the former having allied with the Congress and the latter with the BJP.

This has generated a lot of interest in the contest with the Congress candidate being Sudharsana Nachiappan and the BJP candidate being Hariharan Raja.
