Both P. Chidambaram and Tavleen Singh devoted their columns (Sunday Express, December 29th) to Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee — his new year agenda and his birthday gifts to the nation. People had great expectations from him for a corruption-free government. While he may have fulfilled his other agenda, he is yet to see to this one.

I share P. Chidambaram’s concern over the state of drift in resolving the Indo-Pak conflict over Kashmir, tackling economic issues and handling the Sangh Parivar. The time has come for our PM to assert himself. In J & K, the healing process has started but dialogue with Islamabad has to begin. Also, our economy needs to be put back on track. Those PSUs which are a liability must be disinvested at once. The PM must act as the leader of the whole nation, not just the NDA.

Tavleen Singh is right. The Prime Minister should ask for the status report of all the welfare and development schemes announced so far. It is indeed ironic that a country which is being touted as a software giant and 21st century’s emerging economic superpower still needs to promise, yet again, that every village will have clean drinking water.

How can P. Chidambaram say that an obvious solution to the Indo-Pak problem is to convert the Line of Control into an International Border? Indo-Pak relations have been intermittently on the boil, terrorism replacing open conflict. The hope of peace returning with an International Border is wishful thinking. Vajpayee and Advani are right in refusing to talk with Pakistan until the General calls off cross-border terrorism.

Your wishes, Mr Chidambaram, are not our wishes. Please spell out what is mischievous about the doctrine of Hindu Rashtra. What is pernicious about ‘‘cultural nationalism’’. The very word nationalism is anathema to Congress culture. Nehru defined India ‘‘as a bundle of diversities held together by an invisible thread’’ but never had the courage to discover that invisible thread. Do you believe that different communities can be integrated without at least a common civil code?
