CHANDIGARH, April 26: The Punjab University began its postgraduate exams with a fiasco today. Students of the MA-I English who took the Literature and Criticism paper today were an angered lot with several irregularities in the paper.

Students pointed out that though they were instructed to attempt five questions, the note on the beginning of the paper said: quot;Question number I is compulsory. Answer two questions from Section B and one from Section C.quot; According to the instructions, the number of questions to be attempted added up to four. Besides, while the syllabi states that students would be required to attempt five out of eight questions, the paper had only six questions, students added.

A PU functionary when contacted stated no complaints had been received by the authorities. quot;But if they represent to us through the chairman, we will take appropriate steps to see that the students are not at a loss.quot;
