Euthanasia and India

8226; K. Venkatesh8217;s earnest request for euthanasia in order to be able to donate his organs for the welfare of other human beings has not been considered seriously, following which he has died with his last wish unfulfilled. His case is undoubtedly unique. With many countries across the world changing their attitude towards euthanasia, it is time that India, too, debates the issue. Both in Parliament and outside it.

8212; Saifuddin Khan Aligarh

8226; Whatever one may feel about the court denying the right to die, one cannot overlook the fact that it could be misused. Not by the one wanting to avail
of the right 8212; but by the people who stand to benefit from such a death, given their own vested interests.

8212; R. Mehta Mumbai

8226; So many youngsters shy away from donating even blood. Therefore it is ironical that Venkatesh8217;s desire to help others by donating his organs has been rejected because we have no law on euthanasia.

Why this dithering?

8226; When a premier investigation agency like RAW is staffed by those who don8217;t have the country8217;s interests in mind, how can national security be safeguarded 8216;RAW incompetence8217;, IE, Dec 14? That no effort has been made to trace Rabinder Singh, joint secretary, RAW, or to declare him a proclaimed offender and bring him to account is a sad commentary on the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities. Why is the government dithering over confiscating his ill-gotten wealth? The law abiding common citizen feels let down by the powers-that-be when such events take place.

CBM suggestions

8226; We, the Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace CNDP, India, are greatly disappointed at the failure of India and Pakistan to come up with meaningful nuclear CBMs in their recent official talks. Although there is no substitute for nuclear disarmament, CBMs 8212; when intelligently conceived and applied 8212; makes matters less unsafe. New Delhi and Islamabad seem to lack the vision to bring about such desired steps. We call both governments to rapidly move towards: 1 Separating warheads from all delivery systems and making such procedures transparent and verifiable. b Establishing on both sides of the border a zone of non-deployment of nuclear capable delivery systems. 3 A permanent bilateral test ban pact. 4 Establishing Indo-Pak teams of scientific personnel to periodically visit nuclear-related facilities in both countries.

Wrong approach

8226; The affidavit filed by the government in the Supreme Court that nothing in the Constitution debars a person with a criminal background being appointed as a minister in the council of ministers is a perversion. Just because nothing prevents a man with a criminal background from becoming a minister does not mean that the government should go out of its way to induct them as ministers! It may be interesting to note here that there is nothing in the US law to prevent a lunatic, a bankrupt or a convicted criminal from becoming the US president!
