PUNE, August 16: The 51st Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in the city on Saturday with various social and cultural events organised to mark the occasion.

At the main government function held in Council Hall, Goveror Dr P C Alexander hoisted the national tricolour. Divisional Commissioner Arun Bhatia, Police Commissioner K K Kashyap and district collector Vijay Kumar Gautam were also present.

In another function, Dr Alexander dedicated a unique war memorial at the Morwada junction in Pune Sub Area to the nation.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) felicitated as many as 548 citizens at a function held at the Balgandharva Rangmandir. Mayor Vatsala Andekar pesented them bouquets and mementos.

The Mayor justified the decision of the party leaders’ coordination committee to honour so many citizens saying, “I know their number is large but they are all social workers.”

In Pimpri-Chinchwad Mayor Hanumanth Bhosale unfurled the national flag at the municipal corporation building at Pimpri. Municipal Commissioner Pravinsinh Pardeshi, deputy mayor Rekha Gawde, other elected office-bearers, corporators, citizens and school students were present on the occasion.

The garden department of the PCMC had artfully decorated the building premises.

At a function organised by Pune City Congress Committee, senior Congress leader V N Gadgil hoised the national tricolour at the Congress Bhavan. The Maharashtra Military Foundation organised the flag hoisting ceremony at the old war memorial near Sassoon Hospital to mark the occasion.
