England have named veteran paceman Darren Gough in their team to face West Indies in Sunday’s first one-day international, the start of which was delayed due to overnight rain.

Gough, who has retired from Test cricket, joined Steve Harmison, James Kirtley and Andrew Flintoff in an all-seam attack after England left out spinner Ashley Giles.

Captain Michael Vaughan won the toss and put the West Indies in. When England bat later in the day Vaughan will open the innings for the first time in a one-day international.

West Indies left Ian Bradshaw out of their team, handing a one-day international debut to Dwayne Bravo.

After heavy rain over the last few days the match has been cut to 30-overs a side. Umpires Eddie Nicholls of Guyana and Aleem Dar of Pakistan prefered getting in a reduced-overs match today rather than using tomorrow’s reserve day. It is the opening match of a seven-game series.

A Guyana Defence Force helicopter spent two hours hovering over the field to aid the drying process, but many areas remained muddy. The umpires said that the boundaries would be shortened to remove the badly affected areas from the playing area.
