A day after apologising for imitating Rishab Shetty’s character in Kantara, Ranveer Singh continues to face backlash. As per PTI, an advocate from Bengaluru, named Prashanth Methal, has filed a complaint against the actor, alleging that he hurt his religious sentiments by insulting the sacred tradition of Bhoota Kola. So far, no FIR has been registered concerning this complaint, as per a senior police officer at High Grounds police station. The complaint alleges that Ranveer mocked the sacred ‘Daiva’ tradition on stage during the closing ceremony of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

As per PTI, the complaint said, “I am filing this complaint to bring to your immediate attention the illegal and offensive actions of Bollywood actor Mr Ranveer Singh, which have deeply hurt my religious sentiments and the sentiments of millions of Hindus, particularly the Tulu-speaking community of Karnataka.” The complaint cites Sections 299 (deliberate, malicious act intended to insult religious sentiments), 302 (intentionally wounding religious feelings of another person), and 196 (promoting hatred between different groups on the basis of religion, race, language) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

On Tuesday, Ranveer took to his Instagram Stories to clarify his intentions, writing that he meant only to admire Rishab Shetty’s performance in the film. He added that he has always respected “every culture, tradition, and belief in our country.” His apology came after a complaint by the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) to the Panaji police, which alleged that he insulted Goddess Chamundadevi by imitating Rishab Shetty’s Kantara performance on stage.

For context, during the IFFI closing ceremony, Ranveer had taken the stage to acknowledge Kannada actor Rishab Shetty. He then mimicked Rishab’s performance in the film, which is now drawing a lot of criticism.

Ranveer Singh is currently gearing up for the release of Dhurandhar, scheduled to hit the screens this Friday.
