AMRITSAR, Aug 6: The elections of Guru Nanak Dev University GNDU Teachers Association held yesterday have registered anti-establishment sentiments of the faculty with Democratic Teachers Front DTF and its ally Radical Teachers Front RTF managing to capture the association.
R.K. Bedi, Professor and head of the Physics Department, was elected president by defeating Gurnam Singh Political Science of Progressive Teachers Front Gurnam with a margin of 32 votes. The third contender C.S. Cheema, representing the outgoing team led by B.S. Ghuman of Progressive Teachers Front PTF, finished poor third.
G.M. Singh of DTF-RTF alliance has been elected vice-president by defeating H.S. Bedi and Sukhpreet Singh. The all important office of secretary went to Dewinder Singh of Psychology Department fielded by the same alliance. He defeated his main contender Sukhdev Singh of Molecular Biology with a margin of three votes.
Simrat Kahlon of IAS centre was elected joint secretary and Sukhdev Singh of English Department the new treasurer. While Kahlon belongs to Gurnam Singh group of PTF, Sukhdev Singh represents PTF Ghuman group.
The executive members are Kawaljit Singh Computer Science, R.S. Salaria Computer Science, Balwinder Singh Planning, Gajendra Singh Pharmaceuticals, Daljinder Singh Physical Education and Jagroop Singh Sekhon of Political Science. B.S. Ghuman the outgoing president has lost election for executive seat. Gurnam Singh, who had contested election on anti-establishment agenda, got an unexpected number of 109 votes which gives an indication of increasing level of unrest in the faculty against Vice-Chancellor H.S. Soch.
The Ghuman group won only the treasurer8217;s office. The office of joint secretary won by Kahlon of Gurnam Singh group too appears to have same reasons. She got 121 votes.
