The last two Indo-Pak series have provided thrilling Tests, closely fought and with results. What’s currently happening at Lahore is actually a throwback to a dark past, a time of mammoth totals, slow run-rates and no results. Here are four such matches you may have forgotten (and may not wish to recall)
1989/90: 3rd Test (Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore)
India win toss, bat first. Manjrekar continues good run, his 218 helps India score 509 in two-and-a-half days. Any chance of a result dashed as Aamer Malik and Javed Miandad score tons, Shoaib Mohammad scores a double. That’s 1208 runs for loss of 15 wickets.
Four-match series ends 0-0
Brief scores: India: 509 (S Manjrekar 218, M Azharuddin 77, R Shastri 61). Pakistan: 699 (Aamer Malik 113, Javed Miandad 145, Shoaib Mohammad 203 no).
1984/85: 2nd Test (Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad)
India win the toss and batted first, centuries by Sandeep Patil and Mohinder see them post 500 on the board. Pakistan reply with an equally imposing 674 for the loss of just 6 wickets, thanks to Qasim Omar’s double hundred. That’s all there was time for before the umpires mercifully stopped the contest
Three-Test series ends 0-0
Brief scores: India: 500 (Patil 127, Shastri 139; Azeem Hafeez 4/137). Pakistan: 674 (Mudassar 199, Qasim Umar 210)
1982/83: 1st Test (Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore)
A star-studded series got off to a poor start as batsmen appeared more keen on their own reputations. Pakistan scored 485, India’s batsmen entered the field with one aim in mind: Stay at the crease. They score 379 runs from 125 overs. The match is dead as the India survive till the fifth day
Pak win six-Test series 3-0
Brief scores: Pakistan: 485 (Mohsin Khan 94, Zaheer Abbas 215; Madan Lal 3/101) & 135/1. India: 379 (Gavaskar 83, Amarnath 109; Imran Khan 3/68, Sarfraz Nawaz 4/63)
1978/79: 1st Test (Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad)
The match tottered along with some good batting — four centuries overall — but even Pakistan’s double declaration failed to spark a result. Eventually, India were asked to score 306 runs in 25 overs.
Three-Test series ends 0-0
Brief scores: Pakistan: 503/8 decl (Zaheer Abbas 176, Javed Miandad 154 no; Chandrasekhar 4/130) & 264/4 decl (Asif Iqbal 104). India: 462 (GR Viswanath 145; Mushtaq Mohammad 4/55) & 43/0
