
PUNE, June 25: Two incidents of dowry deaths were reported to the police from the city and its rural outskirts yesterday. While one of the incident was reported from Akurdi, the other took place at Wadapuri village near Indapur.
Bharati Amale, a 24-year-old housewife residing at Akurdi, committed suicide by jumping in a well located near the Formica company. The incident, which took place on June 23 morning, had initially gone as a case of 8220;accidental death8221; in the records of Nigdi police.
However, Bharati8217;s brother Maruti Koli from Nigdi yesterday lodged a complaint with the Nigdi police alleging that Bharati committed suicide because her husband Dnyaneshwar 28 was harassing her over dowry demands.
Koli8217;s complaint stated that Dnyaneshwar harassed Bharati over the demand that her parents should give him a scooter, flat and money to set up a workshop ever since they got married in 1995.
In a separate incident, Prabhavati D Jadhav 20 from Wadapuri village near Indapur committed suicide by setting herself afire at her residence.
Prabhavati8217;s father Govind Babar from Mamurdi village in Haveli taluka has alleged in his complaint that she ended life because her husband Dattatray, father-in-law Rajaram and mother-in-law Leelavati were harassing her for dowry.
