PUNE, MARCH 8: Noted management researcher Dr Jai B P Sinha on Sunday warned against the increasing trend of downsizing in the companies describing it as an inappropriate solution to increase the profitability.

Addressing a gathering at the silver jubilee function of the Institute of Management Development and Research IMDR, Sinha said that cutting down on the staff resulted in marginal profits only for the initial period while adversly affecting the sustainable production over long period.

8220;There is marked difference between downsizing8217; and rightsizing8217; which has to be understood,8221; he said. Sinha, known for his research work on the impact of culture on business organisations, further said that while on one hand the line of senior authorities in the Indian companies was trying to adapt itself to the western concepts, the attitude and basic operating systems remained sterotyped to even feudal.

8220;These discrepancies are only adding to the pressure on the managerial cadre which the young management graduates will have to prepare themselves for,8221; added Sinha.

Calling upon the management institutes to realise the need for imparting core knowledge to the student, Sinha lamented that in the present system more impetus was given on the acquiring skills rather than the knowledge. He observed that a large number of management schools were mushrooming all over the country with the sole intention of making money. 8220;They have corporate big-wigs as the visiting faculties who have nothing to tell except their success stories and flashing their visiting cards 8211; which give high hopes to the students,8221; he added.

Earlier , senior office- bearers of the Deccan Education Society, which runs the institute, spoke on the occasion and gave a brief account of the 25-year-long existence of the management institute. Prominent former, present and visiting faculty members of the institute were felicitated on the occasion.
