Novak Djokovic called his victory against Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal one of the biggest of his career. Turns out, he was only warming up.
Djokovic came up with an even bigger upset yesterday in the final of the Masters Series event, defeating top-ranked Roger Federer, 7-6 (2), 2-6, 7-6 (2). “It’s a dream come true to win such a strong tournament as this and to win against probably the best player ever in the sport,” said Djokovic, who was seeded third.
He has won four tournaments this year, but this was his first victory in five career matches against Federer. Djokovic ended Federer’s 16-match Rogers Cup winning streak. Federer won the event in 2004 and last year; he sat out in 2005 with a foot injury.
Djokovic defeated No 3 Andy Roddick and No 2 Nadal in his previous rounds, becoming the first player to beat the world’s top three ranked players in the same tournament since Boris Becker defeated No 3 Michael Stich, No 1 Pete Sampras and No 2 Goran Ivanisevic in 1994 in Stockholm.
Federer broke Djokovic to end the second set, but Djokovic broke back to open the third. Federer rallied to tie 4-4. Djokovic took over in the tie breaker, finishing off with a drop shot, then a great lob. Federer’s attempted return through his legs struck the net, and Djokovic fell to his knees to celebrate.
