HAMIRPUR, July 12: Sharp differences have surfaced among the Congressmen at a meeting of the district unit of the party held here yesterday. The meeting was presided over by district party president Lala Bhagat Ram Karohta and was attended by 80 party activists and four former legislators, including Narain Chand Parashar, Anita Verma, Kuldeep Singh Pathania and Manjeet Singh Dogra.
The legislators held infighting and ignoring of the interests of party workers responsible for the party8217;s debacle in the previous Assembly elections. The formal legislators virtually came to blows over the cause of their defeat in the elections and a clash was averted only through the intervention of senior party leaders.
The meeting rejected the resignation offer by district president Lala Bhagat Ram Karohta, saying that the matter should be resolved by the party high command. Karohta had earlier offered to step down following opposition by a section of partymen. This section had held Karohta responsible for failing to take the party forward and had demanded that he be replaced by a younger man.
The meeting took to task the Central and State governments for failing to curb the price hike and for helping the black marketeers, and demanded immediate steps to keep the prices in check.
Through a resolution, the party thanked Sonia Gandhi for appointing former minister Sat Mahajan as the state president. The party also mourned the death of veteran Congress leader Sant Ram. A two-minute silence was observed and homages were paid to the departed leader.
The House also condemned the BJP-HVC government for engineering defections in the panchayati raj institutions and civic bodies to enable their candidates to be elected to these organisations.
