Mahendra Singh Dhoni warmed up in typical style for the India Oil Cup with an unbeaten 86, which helped India to a 61-run win over a Sri Lanka Cricket XI. Dhoni came in to join Mohammed Kaif 52 when India were struggling at 104 for 4.
India tried VVS Laxman at the top of the innings with Virender Sehwag, but their partnership lasted only 38 runs. Laxman scored 19 and Sehwag 15. Yuvraj Singh 24 and Rahul Dravid 5 also fell early.
Kaif and Dhoni added 56 before Kaif fell to Pradeep Jayaprakashdaran, who was the pick of the Sri Lanka XI attack with 3 for 35. Once Kaif fell, Dhoni went on the aggressive and, in total, hit five fours and three sixes.
Irfan Pathan, then, showed signs of returning form by claiming four wickets for 42, demolishing the Sri Lanka XI top order. JP Yadav also chipped in with two wickets, for only 11 runs. Wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene came up with some resistence, as he scored 66, including 8 fours and 3 sixes. But, that could only reduce the margin of the defeat. Ashish Nehra, L Balaji, Harbhajan Singh, and Virender Sehwag shared the rest of the wickets.
