
MUMBAI, Dec 30: Superb left-arm spin bowling by Mandar Deorukhkar was instrumental in holders Balmohan Vidyamandir restricting Shardashram English to 169 in 64.2 overs on the first day of the two-day semi-finals of the Harris Shield Inter-School cricket tournament 75 overs, sponsored by Thums-Up at Young Maharashtra Ground, Shivaji Park, today. At close of play, Balmohan were 28 for no loss in 23 overs.
In the other semi-final at the Kamath Memorials ground, Shivaji Park, last year8217;s runners-up IES English did well to bowl out Shardashram Marathi for 197, after being 132 for two at one stage. The bowler to do the damage was leg-spinner Bhavin Thakkar. In reply, IES English were 34 for one in 11 overs at draw of stumps.
English medium, after being put in to bat, lost their wickets at regular intervals.
Opener Soham Dalvi 36, in-form Rohit Salunkhe 48 and Vinayak Mane 38 were the main run-getters for them.
Left-arm spinner Deorukhkar was the wrecker-in-chief with five for 35 in 19.2 overs. He was well-supported by off-spinner Sanket Chitre who finished with 3 for 41 in 20 overs.
Marathi medium began badly losing two wickets for 19 runs, however, the third-wicket pair of opener Chinmaye Madiye 59: 7215;4 and Mumbai under-16 captain Arjun Mestry 83: 10215;4 added 113 runs.
After the exit of these two, the other batsmen succumbed to the leg-spin of Thakkar who finished with five for 38. Medium-pacer Prathamesh Athavalye who did the early damage took two for 24 and had the prize wicket of Onkar Khanvilkar 0, while off-spinner Anirudha Kusle captured three for 24.
