Malvinder Singh Kang, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP from Punjab’s Anandpur Sahib, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging “sternest possible action” against BJP leader Kapil Mishra for allegedly circulating a doctored video to falsely accuse former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi of making derogatory remarks about Sikh Gurus.
In the letter dated January 17, Kang has invoked the legacy of the Sikh Gurus and accused Mishra of attempting to “incite communal disharmony” by weaponising Sikh religious sentiments for political gain. Citing forensic reports from the Punjab and Delhi Forensic Science Laboratories, Kang claimed the video in question was fabricated and that Atishi “never spoke” the words attributed to her.
“This is not a political misjudgment. It is blasphemy by design,” Kang wrote, asserting that the circulation of the video amounted to a deliberate attempt to provoke outrage for harvesting political gains by weaponising Sikh religious sentiment.
Reminding the Prime Minister of his public expressions of faith in the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and referring to the government’s role in ensuring the safe return of the Guru Granth Sahib from Afghanistan as evidence of Modi’s sensitivity to Sikh religious sentiments, Kang said, “It is precisely for this reason that the current developments cause profound anguish.”
He said that the Sikh community was commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur when the video was circulated. To invoke the Gurus’ names through “lies and manipulation” for political mileage, the letter said, is an “unforgivable violation” of their legacy.
Kang added, “We therefore expect the sternest possible action against Kapil Mishra, including his removal from all positions of authority and a clear, public denunciation of his actions. Such decisive action will not weaken your leadership; it will strengthen it. It will send an unambiguous message that the sanctity of the Gurus is non-negotiable and that no political ambition stands above Dharma”.
He said the Sikh community has always stood as the sword and shield of the nation. “Today, it seeks not favour, but justice and moral clarity. Your intervention at this moment will reaffirm that the ideals for which the Gurus laid down their lives continue to be protected in modern India,” he concluded.
Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Saturday said that it has been found that the video of Leader of Opposition Atishi allegedly making derogatory remarks against a Sikh guru was not doctored, and that a CBI probe will be ordered in the matter.
During the Winter Session of the Assembly on January 6 on the state government’s programme held last year to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the BJP had alleged that Atishi made objectionable remarks about the Sikh Guru. Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra had uploaded a video of Atishi making the statement in the House. Following this, the Delhi Assembly had sent the video for forensic examination.
