CALCUTTA, June 20: Jagmaohn Dalmaiya today submitted his resignation from the post of honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with effect from July 1.

Dalmiya had taken over as the president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on June 16.

Dalmiya told a press conference here that as per ICC rules and regulations, the ICC president could not hold any executive position in any board and hence in a letter to BCCI president Raj Singh Dungarpur, he tendered his resignation. Under the same clause, Dalmiya has already relinquished his position as the secretary of the Asian Cricket Council, a post he held for four years. “Normally, the ACC secretary has a two-year term. But I had the rare distinction of being asked to continue for a special tenure” he informed with understandable pride.

However, Dalmiya will continue to work as the BCCI secretary till June 30. “My resignation will hold good from July, 1” he said. “This period is to allow BCCI to choose my successor.” While not including the betting controversy to his list of “immediate matters”, Dalmiya asserted that the issue will be dealt with by the BCCI. “It will be handled, just wait and see,” the ICC president said with a firm nod.

Dalmiya took over as the secretary of the Indian Board in September 1993.
