Curfew was clamped on Ahmednagar city today to quell the violence that erupted after Muharrum procession late last night. It will be in place till 6 am on Thursday.
Trouble began at 7.30 pm on Tuesday when the procession reached Kotla area and a group of youngsters there started pelting stones at the bystanders. Soon, tension gripped other areas and reports of stone-pelting poured in from various parts of the city, including Chowpaty Karanja, Telikhunt, Siddhibag, Aurangabad road, Kondyamama chowk and Mangalgate.
Then, a mob attacked a house and a bakery, and set three vehicles, including an auto-rickshaw, on fire.
The arson continued till noon today, and even a lathicharge failed to stop the mob. All shops, commercial establishments, theatres downed shutters. With the situation threatening to get out of control, IG of Nashik Range Ankush Dhanvijay, who arrived in the city in the morning, decided to clamp curfew.
Six police personnel, including two sub-inspectors and four civilians, were injured in the stone-pelting. Rajendra Radhakisan Geete, one of the injured, is in a serious condition. Over 100 people, including an NCP corporator Samad Khan Wahab, have been booked under various sections of the IPC, pertaining to rioting.
The stone-pelting was so heavy that the Ahmednagar Municipal Corporation has set up two special squads to clear the roads. IG Dhanvijay and DSP Madhukar Gavit described the situation as tense but under control.
