
Two Shakeel gangsters shot dead in encounter
Two sharp-shooters owing allegiance to Karachi-based gangster Chhota Shakeel were killed in an encounter with the police at Jogeshwari East on Saturday afternoon.
The gangsters arrived at the BEST depot adjoining the Western Express Highway, Majaswadi at 1.30 pm when they were confronted by a waiting police team. When asked to surrender, the duo fired back, API Ravindra Angre claimed adding there was an exchange of fire when they attempted to flee. Seriously injured, Ashraf Nisar Sheikh 25 and Mudhakar Budhaji Jadhav 27 were taken to Cooper Hospital where they were declared dead before admission, said police.
Firearms seized at Jogeshwari
Police seized three firearms and ammunition near a pump house at Meghwadi at Jogeshwari East on Friday. Three men found moving suspiciously were apprehended and a search revealed they were carrying two .32 country-made revolvers and a .38 handgun with seven live rounds. The three accused identified as Vatimulla Nasulla Khan 38, Unni Gopinath Nair 24 alias Shreejit and Raju Kashidar 22 have been arrested under the Bombay Police Arms Acts.
Search on for Harkat members
Police have launched a manhunt for four Harkat-ul-Ansar terrorists, allegedly involved in smuggling arms and storing them at Golden Soil building in Jogeshwari West. After interrogating the arrested Pakistani Inter Services Intelligence agents the police have announced the names of the terrorists as Abdul Rahim Sheikh alias Chaman 25, Rashid alias Raju 28-30, Mohammed Ashraf alias Nawab 25-28 and Mohammed Amjad alias Haider. The Crime Branch believes that the foursome stayed at Behram Baug.
Sena corporator held for assault
Shiv Sena corporator from Parel, Parag Vitthal Chavan, was arrested by the Bhoiwada police Saturday afternoon for assaulting a contractor and damaging his equipment on Friday night. According to police sources, some construction work was being conducted in TCI Compound by Dhaval Ashok Waswani, an Andheri resident. Chavan and about eight of his associates came to the place and asked the contractor to stop the work since the neighbourhood was being disturbed by the noise, police said. After this, Chavan is reported to have assaulted the contractor and also snatched his mobile phone and smashed the windscreen of his car with stones, according to police sources.
Retd policeman8217;s son poses as cop
Police have arrested the son of a retired policeman who was posing as a police constable and extorting money from couples who used to sit in gardens. Sub-inspector S Desai, Kalachowkie police station said police spotted a man moving about in a suspicious manner in Lalbaug last week. On being questioned, he said his name was Dashrath Subharao Patil 26 and that he was a police constable. However, his identity card appeared to be fake, and on being interrogated he admitted that he was using it to extract money from young couples who used to sit in various parks and gardens of the city, the officer stated.
Stallowner beats drug addict to death
Police have arrested a stallowner from Churchgate who had beat to death a drug addict for trying a steal a handbag from the stall earlier this week. According to Kaisar Ahmed, inspector, Azad Maidan police station, an unidentified body was found on Monday with several assault marks. Inquiries revealed the man had been assaulted by a stall owner with a stick, since he was suspected of stealing a handbag from his stall.
The police registered a case of murder and on Wednesday, arrested the stall owner, Joseph Balya Nadar, who has confessed to the crime. The deceased has been identified as Bhuleshwar, and his body is still lying unclaimed in the morgue, he added.
