
Police nab seller of fake antiques: A notorious cheat was nabbed when he was trying to sell idols claiming to be of antique value on Tuesday afternoon.
The Property Cell of Mumbai police received information that a person staying in a hotel in south Mumbai had spread word around that he wanted to sell idols of Vishnu, Laxmi and Ganesh, which he claimed to be antiques. The police raided the hotel and arrested Sayed Mohammed Shabir 34 while trying to sell the fake idols to a businessman. Besides the idols rough diamonds and other precious stones worth around Rs 44,500 were also seized from Sheikh, said senior inspector Vilas Tupe. Investigations have revealed that Sheikh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigations and seized the same idols from him in New Delhi in 1990. The Archeological Society of India after examining the items had certified them as fake. The cheat took possession of the idols and made another attempt to sell them, said Assistant Police Inspector A Dhanedhar. The othermembers of the squad were Pradeep Kale, A Kawlekar, A Saigaonkar and D Sankhe.
Woman gagged to death, 2 held: The D N police have arrested the husband and mother-in-law in connection with a dowry death at D N Nagar this morning.
Vimla 22 was gagged to death around 4 am at her residence at Room No 311, Sitladevi Compound, under the jurisdiction of D N Nagar police station. A post mortem report is awaited, said the police. Vimla8217;s husband Shivwetti Harijan 27, mother-in-law Damyanti and maid servant Maria Harijan have been arrested, the police added. The victim8217;s father later told the police that his daughter was tortured for dowry.
Youth shot at in Malad: A youth was shot at near his residence at Malad west this morning. Sayed Hussain Rizvi 25 was shot at by his brother-in-law Abdul alias Dada and an unidentified man near his residence at Collector8217;s Colony, Malvani at around 5 am, the police said. Rizvi was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital with bullet wounds in his stomach andthigh. His condition is stated to be stable.
4 Gawli members detained: The police have detained four members of the Arun Gawli gang under the provisions of Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Persons Acts. They have been lodged at Amravati Central Prison. The detained have been identified as Paresh Thakkar alias Parya, Prakash Mudras alias Pakya Sukumar Shetty alias Shiva and Parac Todkari.
